Flower field at Sunnyside Farm, near Rocky Hill

Submitted by Caroline Tandy
Name Flower field at Sunnyside Farm, near Rocky Hill
Distance 0.01 miles from TR21 0NW
Description The triangular field in the foreground to this photo is used for the production of Narcissus flowers. When this photo was taken (late April 2008) the remaining Narcissus had just gone over - the white flowers which can be seen are the introduced (and invasive but beautiful) Three-cornered leek, seen all over Scilly and mainland Cornwall, which is sometimes confused with the white bluebell. The patches of blue are clumps of Spanish bluebell. Sunnyside farm produces scented Narcissus for 'export' from October to April in the mild climate - the high field hedges provide shelter from the wind. More bulb fields can be seen in the middle distance (left) and on the horizon are the terminal building and control tower of St. Mary's airport (in SV9110)
