Burnham: The Priory

Submitted by Nigel Cox
Name Burnham: The Priory
Distance 0.39 miles from SL1 6LA
Description The old part of this building, comprising the gable ends and the turret was constructed as a country house in the early part of the 19th century and is now Grade II listed. Part of a very modern and large extension is just visible to the right over the conservatory, and the whole complex is now used for business purposes. An 1847 newspaper features an advert describing the house to be let as follows: "A delightful country residence, of moderate pretensions, pleasantly situate, commanding extensive views of the country, Windsor Castle forming a pleasing object. The elevation is in the old English style, with an air of quiet respectability, and is approached by a shady drive with a lodge entrance. The arrangements are complete and the whole in perfect keeping. About 20 acres of meadow and ornamental land belong to the house, completely surrounding it, with small farm-yard, well-watered, and appropriate buildings, all in excellent repair. The situation is most desirable, being in a fine sporting country, near to the Queen's hounds, within an easy drive to Windsor, with rapid railway communication with London."
