| Description | A traditional build ex Boddingtons pub on High Street West, which appears to still be going strong. Now open plan, this pub was originally laid out on a plan I can only recall seeing in the Glossop area. The door opened to a hallway about 8 to 10 feet wide, this would sometimes have some simple chairs and small tables on one or both sides. This hall would be about 20 feet long and at about half way down there would be doors on each side. One door (usually the right-hand one) would lead to a Lounge room the other to a plainly decorated, games room both of these had their windows to the front of the building. At the end of this hall would sit the bar, with to one side (the same side as the lounge) the entrance to a further public room, a snug, and to the other access to the private area and possibly the toilets. None of the individual rooms had any direct access to the bar, which could only be accessed from the hall (with the possible exception of a serving hatch into the snug at the rear). Another example, which was still in this layout the last time I frequented it (which will be at least 12 years ago) was The Crown on Charlestown Road (in SK0393, not yet geographed). |
