| Description | Located in the mall of South Shields, Private John Simpson in the 3rd Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps. Simpson is held as the archetypical hero in Australia. With his donkey, he is credited with saving many wounded men on the cliffs and beaches of Gallipoli during WWI. His reputation has been tarnished a little in recent years when it became widely known he was an English ship deserter who settled in Australia. He died in action on 19 May 1915. |
