Park Place - The Station Hotel that never was

Submitted by David M Jones
Name Park Place - The Station Hotel that never was
Distance 0.04 miles from LL15 1NB
Description The original route of the Denbigh to Corwen railway line (opened 1863) was intended to run along the low lying land to the west of Ruthin. The station was to have been located on the western side of the town and the Park Place Hotel was built to serve as the Station Hotel (the type and shade of brick testifies to this). Other railway buildings were also built along Park Road, including a row of cottages to house the railway workers. However the Myddleton-West family living at Ruthin Castle opposed the rail route because it would pass close to the castle and as the family were very influential landowners in the area they got the route altered. The railway was re-routed to the eastern side of the town which involved the excavation of a long cutting to the south-east of the town, the extra construction work and duplication of buildings added considerably to the cost of the railway.
